Coaches Hot Seat Analysis
Jeff Jagodzinksi walked into quite
a situation at Boston College after the departure of Tom
O'Brien, with a football program that had won 52 games
in the past 6 years and what ended up being the third
overall pick in the recent NFL draft in Matt Ryan.
You have to give Jagodzinksi credit for recognizing the
talent on his new team and for keeping around a coach
like Frank Spaziani on the defensive side of the ball,
which helped to make for a much smoother 1st year
transition. BC opened up the '07 season 8-0,
including very impressive wins over Wake Forest and
Virginia Tech, but then fell back a little with losses
to Florida State and Maryland. After a miracle win
at Clemson (that included some incredibly stupid
defensive play by the Tigers), in the rematch for the
ACC title, Frank Beamer and the Hokies got some
redemption with a 30-16 win over Boston College.
The question now is, with Matt Ryan gone to the NFL,
what can Jagodzinski do to follow up the '07 11-3
season? Was it Tom O'Brien's players matched to a
slightly better offensive playcaller, or is there
something else going on at BC under Jagodzinski that we
are unable to see or discern. 2008 will tell that
tale, because BC faces a very difficult upcoming
schedule and here is how we believe it will play out.
Coaches Hot Seat
Bottom Line
We predict that
Jeff Jagodzinski and Boston College will have a 5-7
record in 2008.
Boston College begins the season in a very odd place
with a game in Cleveland, Ohio against Kent State.
Kent State struggled in '07 with a 3-9 record, including
losing their last 8 games, so BC will open the season up
at 1-0. Week 2 is one of the most fascinating
games of the year in the ACC as Paul Johnson brings his
new Georgia Tech team to Boston for a match-up against
the Eagles. This should be a very good football
game, and we see Johnson getting his first big win at
Tech, which takes the BC record to 1-1 after two games.
Week 3 is another great game, but this time against
Conference USA foe Central Florida. George O'Leary
is building a very good football program in Orlando, and
they will give BC all there worth, before losing to the
Eagles in the 4th quarter. After three games, BC
is 2-1. Week 4 is a home game against Rhode
Island, which should be an easy win, so BC is 3-1 after
four games. Week 5 is one of many "Grudge Match"
games between coaches across the country in '08, with BC
traveling to Raleigh to play Tom O'Brien and NC State.
BC hammered NC State in '07, and the Wolfpack will want
to avenge that beating in 2008. We see NC State
and O'Brien getting a win in this game, which takes the
BC record to 3-2 after five games. Week 6 is
another great ACC game, and what will be the 3rd game in
the last 12 months between Virginia Tech and Boston
College. Once Frank Beamer and his staff draw a
bead on you, they will usually have your number, and we
see Va. Tech getting a win in this game over the Eagles.
After six games, BC is 3-3. If BC is 3-3 after six
games, then desperation will be in the air when Boston
College travels to Chapel Hill to play North Carolina.
Butch Davis should have his football team playing very
well by this point in the season, and we see UNC beating
BC in this game. After seven games, BC is 3-4.
If BC is 3-4 after seven games, then the November 1
match-up with Clemson will be a huge game for
Jagodzinski and his Eagles. Clemson will be loaded with
talent in the upcoming season, and they will be shooting
for a very big goal in 2008, and they will be able to
hand BC in this game as well. After eight games,
BC is 3-5. After four straight losses BC hosts
Notre Dame in week 9 and this will be a must, must, must
win game for the Eagles. In what should be a very
good game, we see BC getting the win at home, which
would take their record to 4-5 after nine games.
Week 10 will be another big game for BC as they struggle
to get to .500 for the year, but a trip to Tallahassee
to play FSU will be a very tough place to get a win.
Jimbo Fisher should have the Seminoles offense moving by
this time of the year, and we see FSU getting a win over
BC in this game. After ten games, BC is 4-6.
Just when a trip to play Wake Forest on the road would
be the worst thing to see on the schedule, BC faces a
trip to Winston-Salem to play the Demon Deacons.
Jim Grobe and Wake Forest will be looking to avenge
their '07 loss to BC, and they will be ready for the
Eagles this time around, and get the win in this game.
After eleven games, BC is 4-7. To finish the
season Boston College hosts Maryland in Boston, and BC
will be looking to get a win in this game to create some
momentum for the 2009 season. We see BC getting a
win over the Terps, to finish the '08 regular season at
5-7.
After a terrific 11-3 record in
2007, a 5-7 record by Boston College in '08 will be
quite a letdown, but the ACC is toughening up across the
conference and Jagodzinski and his staff will have to
work very hard in the coming years to recruit players to
Boston that can compete against an ACC that is getting
tougher everyday.
